A few weeks ago I was asked to tell the MLNW story through a mini documentary video about how I started Make.Love.Not.War. for VIMBY (Video in my backyard, a Mark Burnett company). Thanks to Joe Nolan the wonderful director, editor, and scout for finding me and making this happen. I couldn't have asked for more with the way it turned out and am so lucky to have so much support and love in my life. After seeing this, I am super stoked to start pumping out the new years collections... xo

All of these peices are truly one-of-a-kind. They are all made with vintage materials from fabrics, to trims and buttons. There is no other fashion brand out there like M.L.N.W. creating sustainable clothing utilizing old materials and vintage inspirations combined with futuristic expectations. Every single piece is handmade by Sarah Marie Muhl in her home studio in south Philadelphia.

This particular collection was inspired by early rock 'n roll stars mixed with our obsessions of pop culture and celebrity.

Dollywood!

I've just returned from a two week trip down south with some gal pals. We had a blast visiting Dollywood, Memphis, and Nashville before driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains on our way home. I've been a fan of Dolly ever since I was a little girl and was so excited to spend a couple days in her hometown of Pigeon Forge, TN while visiting her theme park and checkin' out the crazy sights that this small southern town has to offer... check it out

yay road trip!
Our hotel room was complete with a beautiful view of an upside down building?! Pigeon Forge is full of weird museums, dinner theaters, touristy restaurants, and a million gift shops all located within a 5 mile stretch of highway in the middle of no where.

dolly's closet- a gift shop where you can dress up just like her
two of my favorite ladies- dolly and loretta
dolly was first introduced to the public through The Porter Wagner Show in the 60's. He hired her to replace Norma Jean after she had left the show to become a big movie star. Porter was a major contributor to Dolly's success and was the reason she wrote "I will always love you". This is one of his awesome costumes from the show. Man I need a bedazzler BAD
in the Dolly museum you can sit at a parlor and try on many different Dolly hairstyles. We sat a little too long, and had way too much fun playin' around with her hair through the ages.
the 1950's themed section of the park was one of our favorites. All the cool cars, sweet music, and retro style shows were pretty sweet.

choo choo train up the mountain was a nice break from roller coasters, but left us covered in soot.

we left the hotel in a rush for memphis but not before building a body out of pillows in the bed for housekeeping to find. hehe
couldn't leave pigeon forge without checkin' out Sexy Stuff.

I can't believe it's been almost a month since my trip to L.A. (sorry for the delayed post)
I had the pleasure of working on the latest Buddy Society show at the historic Ebell Clubhouse in Highland Park, CA. The night featured awesome musical acts, and a sweet new collection of handmade shorts and tees by my pal Violet Valen-Manak. I will admit the prep for this event was a lot of hard work, but it was definitely worth it! The show was a huge hit and I got to spend some much needed buddy time with Violet.

It was so nice to get out of the city and meet my good friend Amber and her sweet pal Jennifer. Jen was our gracious host and fabulous stylist for our shoot at Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster PA. It was truly a dream to be shooting on the grounds of an abandoned amusement park that had been in operation from 1890-1981. There were plenty of old windows to spy in, trails to follow, and even broken down roller coaster cars from the wildcat coaster (1928) to play on. Our theme was inspired by the roaring 20's vibe of the park itself and Jen's super wardrobe selection (check out her etsy for sweet vintage finds you can own). I had so much fun spending the day in the fresh air and playing dress up at this hidden historical site. Major thanks (and props) to Amber for her wonderful "eye" behind the camera, and Jen nifer for pulling amazing outfits that every girl should own and treasure.

Things for Anita

Here are some photos of recent things custom made and repaired for one of my best clients. The first was actually 2 identical dresses she found and wanted me to fix up. One dress was turned into a jacket while the other just needed a few minor alterations (some sizing/hem adjustments). It's safe to say that after mastering this project, I can (and will) add sleeves to pretty much anything!

The following photos are from a corset I made out of a ball gown Anita had. The bottom of this top was 3 layers of ruffled silk taffeta that was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. I suggested we restore the top half of the gown so she can wear with slacks or a skirt. The finished piece was a beautiful embellished corset with no stone left unsewn.

Sarah did all the styling featuring her beautiful handmade pieces perfectly. Laura captured the mood around various parts of her new home in Ambler PA, and April Al-Zahrani made me look fresh with her mad make-up/hairstyling skills.

Hello 2011!
here are some photos of a ball gown I was commissioned to rework.
It was floor length with a 6ft train so I turned it into a fancy sweet cocktail dress with a new removable short train. I used the extra fabric to make a bolero jacket, and replaced all the tiny sequins that had fallen off throughout the years.

This Piece was a lot of hard work, but I'm proud to say she loved it.
It was also my first time making a bolero with a super high couture collar.

(center) My dress is from wet seal (i keep it real rap at $15!), my shoes are vintage hiking boots (i traded for them), and my necklace was a gift from esther k. Cabin life has been so good to us.
I'm feeling a little nostalgic about leaving this wonderful place, but I'm ready for what's to come.
In memory of our lovely home and the surrounding environment, I was fortunate enough to do a Virginia inspired shoot with the insanely talented duo Jason and Tammy Keefer.
It was truly a dream to be able to utilize the landscape around our cabin and create magical photos that really emphasize the inspiration behind M.L.N.W.
All of the clothing was designed, constructed, and styled by Me (except Clint's...that's coming later ;-)
Tammy and Jason shot on 35mm Film and Polaroid, which was very exciting (i adore film!!!!).
I feel so lucky to have had the chance to work with them before we left.

Glinda the Good

Finally!

About a month ago I was commissioned to create a "Glinda the Good Witch" costume for Ms. Jackie B. of the Black Box Players, for their annual "Wizard of Oz" production.
It took almost 50 yards of tulle, lots of patience, passion, and a steady sequin hand to construct this piece.
I designed the back as a lace up corset so it can fit different "Glinda's" of varying sizes, and the crown (my favorite part) was cut from lightweight plastic sheets then covered with fabric, beads, pearls and sequins to help it sparkle beautifully under stage lights.
All of my work concluded this afternoon during the productions dress rehearsal held at the Burnley Moran Auditorium. My stage shots aren't the best, but we got some nice detail shots behind the scenes. I'm a little sad to see the end of this project, but proud and satisfied with the reactions and work that I put into it. Thank you Ms. B for finding me, then trusting and believing in my vision for this costume.

thanks to my neighbor i now have a means of "letting loose". whether i'm constucting a costume, designing a line, or tailoring shirts, i'm happy to have a new outlet. stay tuned for updates and photos of things i've been busy making. next to come is a portfolio for things i've designed featuring the landscape around us, a one of a kind wardrobe, and camera work by who knows who.

for those of you who don't really know me;

I was a competitive figure skater for 15 years. I remember training before school, and leaving school early to spend the rest of my time at the rink. I loved it. The goal: the olympics.
Every time the winter olympics roll around i get butterflies in my stomach and emotionally excited on a level i can't really explain. Even though i don't skate anymore, I still get a little nervous when the winter games begin.

Valentine's day used to be my favorite holiday in grade school. We'd spend a week making "mail boxes" for our Valentine party on Friday. I'd wait all week to wear a special valentine outfit and exchange silly candy cards with kids I can't even remember today. It was sweet. On that note, I'd like to share some Valentine's with all of you and hope love finds its way to your heart this year.

How's a gal supposed to keep up with her blog?

its been about 5 months since my last post, but i'll try my best to wrap up everything in a nice tiny nutshell.
in fact one word can sum it up:
SNOW!
on another note, i've found 2 new jobs, so most of my time is now swallowed by one of dual duties. i don't mind it though... which brings me to my next point, my wardrobe. with my new found employment at a trendy local boutique i realize i have no decent clothes. i have been dressing like a teen out of the 90's for the past 4 years and just now realized i need a serious update. staple pieces like leggings, tee's without holes, and cute shoes would be nice to have.
alas, ya can't get new clothes if ya ain't got the funds.
rent comes first, then bills, then food. whatever is left over... well nothing is left over.
saving's a bitch after the holidays.
the snow doesn't help.

everything has been happening so fast I don't even know where to start. 2 weeks ago the idea of living in the country was just a dream. Now we've signed a lease, own a car, and i'm selling shit on craigslist to lighten the load we'll have to move to Virginia in September. just yesterday we found a sweet cabin in the middle of nowhere about 20 miles south of charlottesville and fell in love. It is super cheap, secluded, and everything we could dream of. Last week we found an awesome car to get us back and forth. today i'm overwhelmed with the idea of being able to work part time and do whatever i want to do in a beautiful environment. I wont miss being hollered at every time i step out the front door one bit! in less than a month clint and i will be living a completely different lifestyle in a completely different setting, with a fresh perspective on all the projects we've been meaning to start.

The winds of change have finally picked up, and i don't mind it at all.

this time last week i was sipping margaritas with new friends from montreal in phoenix arizona. I had hiked the grand canyon, and climbed 2 energy vortexes while marveling at wonderful red rocks. I was also sleeping in a tent under the stars next to rachel who drove surprisingly well the entire time we had our car. needless to say our early spring vaca was much needed and provided a wonderful awakening for my creativity which has been stifled by these shitty winter philly months. even though its been hard getting back into the routine this week, my thoughts are free, my spirit is at ease, and i'm more motivated to explore and produce rather than hibernate. that warm weather can't come soon enough. i just hope my tan doesnt fade before i'm off to florida in 3 weeks. they say st. augustine holds the fountain of youth. i'll be the judge of that ;-) meanwhile, enjoy these shots from last weeks trip.... many more are on the myspace page. myspace.com/nojellono

you know how it goes...selling cupcakes, posing for pictures, and making killer music with the talented ms. Rachel. we've started to record which is more of a process than i remember, but it's still fun.
the year definitely started off with some big changes, and will probably continue to shift around. i don't mind it though. i get bored when things become too routine anyway.

do you ever get the urge to do nice things for other people?

whether its a partner, friend, stranger, whatever... you just want to do something nice. by doing something nice i mean doing something the other person your doing it for will appreciate and enjoy without expecting anything in return.

anyway, do something nice for someone else and don't expect some sort of reward for doing it.

have you ever seen a rabbit sleep like a dog?
